It's a fact that war changes people. Not only sentimentally but physically too. This project titled "We Are The Not Dead" by photographer, journalist and filmmaker Lalage Snow depicts this change in the soldiers' faces caused by the hardships and the anxiety in the war zones. Snow made this series of portraits of British soldiers over a period of seven months, before, during and after their operational deployment to Afghanistan.
Observing the three different photo portraits of each soldier, we can detect the physical changes. The eyes never lie and their gazes at the third image speak loudly. The fear of death or injury, the homesickness, the battles on the frontline, the transition period from home to the war zones and back maturate these men abruptly.
Snow's intention with the series is not only to honor their bravery and courage, but to also sensitize the public opinion over the psychological and emotional transformation that every soldier goes through.
